Most everyone responded to Doug Abbott's big heart, compassion and

humor -- his friends, his colleagues, the correctional staff,

even the inmates he cared for as a nurse at the Sonoma County Jail.

Abbott, co-workers said, treated everyone with respect, whatever

their role in the jail, never talking down to the inmates and

trying new ways to connect with patients who proved challenging.

"He made it enjoyable for himself and those around him," Nursing

Director Earlene Debini said. "He was a good man -- kind,

generous, willing to tackle anything."

Abbott, 39, of Angwin, died in a vehicle crash Feb. 8 on his way

home from a late shift at the jail.

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday adjourned its

regular weekly meeting in his memory.

Abbott is survived by parents Beryl and Estelle Abbott, brothers

Daniel Abbott and David Abbott, and sister Julie Abbott, residents

of Inchelium, Wash.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Napa Community

Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1105 G St., Napa.
